Plein Air

Plein air (or Alla Prima - in one hit) paintings are done on the spot and generally with no or only slight modification afterwards. Quite an exciting experience, time is short as the light and shadows constantly change. It can get windy and unexpectedly wet or even hot and sunny. People and cattle are equally inquisitive and can be difficult to deal with while you are working. I have sometimes forgotten to bring essential kit and once my easel collapsed just as I was finishing causing urgent repair work to both the painting and the easel!
